[Music] So why did I become an eye surgeon? Well initially
after qualifying for Manchester University, I spent a few years completing a surgical
rotation whereby I saw many different branches of surgery–orthopedics, cardiac, and the
like. My attention was then turned to ophthalmic surgery because I found it very fascinating.
It involved a detailed knowledge of physic and optics. And it involved operating through
a microscope at a very delicate level, it also significantly changed people’s lives.
People would go from being blind one day and then the next day they would see things perfectly
well and the look of joy on their faces and happiness is something that really cheers
me up in my daily practice. It is also quite a wide field. People often think that we just
deal with the eyes but in fact many conditions can affect the eyes. Diabetes, thyroid, strokes
being just a few conditions that we have to deal with that manifest with diseases in the
eyes. So it’s a very fascinating and rewarding subject for me.
