When to Be Concerned about Eye Floaters

Posted on August 6, 2019 by Jason Robles

Hi doctors, I got floaters in my eyes for the past couple of years But recently it’s become very irritating is this dangerous, and is there anything I can do to get rid of them naturally Let’s get this question to eye surgeon dr. Brian boxer Walker who joins us now via Skype welcome doc Floaties are clumps of debris or other types of specks in the gel part of the back of the eye and typically they’re harmless however if you start to notice tons of new floaters or lots of flashing lights or a Dark curtain coming across your vision that could be a serious retina detachment And you need to be seen emergently just in case now people that are more nearsighted are more likely to have floaters as are people who had cataract surgery and Those who have uncontrolled diabetes those are risk factors The good news is that your floaters over time will typically get better But if they do persist and it becomes a problem, or it’s bothersome for you, then there’s a laser treatment that can help That’s great. That’s good to know yeah. I have done I’ve had over a long time because I’m nearsighted I’ve been nearsighted since I was five So I started getting my first floaters when probably it was 16 or 17 and Just like doctor said it’s actually gotten better for me over time, but nearsighted This kind of runs in my family and my mom just recently started getting a bunch of floaters kind of freaking her out But it’s really good to know there is a laser treatment if it continues to worsen dr. Brian put it best if you’re in doubt or worried go see an eye doctor Or if you’re really worried you could be having something serious like retinal detachment go to the ER dr. Brian You are the man. Thanks my friend You

For me, it is whenever I first see floaters(if I ever do). My eyesight is very bad and I even started getting bad double vision a few years ago. Doctors are not sure why. So I have a pretty high risk of a detachment….

I am nearsighted and I see floaters all the time and I have gone through periods where sometimes I see white flashes of light in my vision and sometimes it's blue.

I am very near sighted and I see an eye specialist because it causes retina problems. I've had eye laser surgery twice because my retina has had holes in it.

My eyesight is perfect but I’ve had floaters since I was maybe a preteen. Some are clear, some are gray, and some are black. I have maybe 20+ in each eye. I mainly only notice them when looking at a blank wall or a clear blue sky. But there’s this one black one in my right eye that is so thick and dark that I see it constantly. Even when I close my eyes.
Sometimes when I’m bored I’ll “play” with it. Like trying to make it purposely move in a certain direction or certain patterns. I’m sure I look like an idiot to everyone when I randomly move my eyes around.

When I was really young (kindergarten young) I used to see black spots all the time and I thought nothing of it. But after I got glasses it has gotten better. All this time I thought everyone had them lol

I have floaters myself. Recently I just turned 18 and I see new spots in my eye that I haven't seen before. I went to the optometrist and he confirmed that my eyes are okay but then two weeks later I'm seeing flashes in my peripheral vision! This is really frustrating me

I've had floaters since kindergarten… I have no nearsightedness, I actually have a stellar vision and am able to see faraway details and colors most people can't, of course, if the floaters are out of the way. I don't and didn't have cataracts and I also don't have diabetes. I have had random flashes of light every day, it's quick and happens maybe once or twice every day. About six months ago I got a more concerning kind of lights show, it was many seemingly infinitely small yet very bright streaks of light coming and disappearing very much comparable to fireworks, but if they were made of optic fibres with colored light in them, it happened once for about 1 whole minute. For about 5 years now the floaters are getting progressively worse. It's very concerning, but I have no idea where to go since medical care in Canada is not that obvious, and usually doctors are innacessible because of the flocks of people just waiting for them already.

Oh, and also I have some kind of very inconvenient sensibility to light, I have to squint even on cloudy days else my eyes physically hurt. And if I stay in bright light without sunglasses for too long, I end up seeing all green when I go indoors again. Almost like somebody put an annoying half opaque green filter on my sight that is self illuminated. It lasts about 5-10 minutes after exposure.

I had floaters and went to two different doctors who both told me it was nothing and then later that week I went blind in that eye from a major retinal tear and detachment. If they're bad enough to bother you don't take "don't worry about it" for an answer.

Eye floaters are lines, dots, or other shapes that people with this condition see floating around their field of vision. These shapes are not static and appear to dart around when the person looks sideways. Eye floaters are more prominent when looking at a bright area, such as the sky or the horizon. Although most cases of eye floaters are benign, in some cases the floaters are a symptom of a serious medical condition, such as a retinal tear. It is therefore extremely important that you seek advice from a doctor as soon as you develop this condition.

Once your doctor confirms that there is no underlying condition causing the eye floaters, you will be informed about the options available for eye floaters treatment. Most doctors recommend that you simply ignore them, and they will explain that with time your brain will adapt and stop responding to their stimuli. In other words, you will start noticing them less, much like you stop noticing the tight feeling of your shoes after a while. However, many people report that they still notice their eye floaters, even after several years have passed. Indeed, many report that their condition actually gets worse, and the number of eye floaters may increase and they may get denser too. This is associated with changes that occur to the vitreous humor with age – both a reduced fluidity and reduced transparency. Therefore, some people decide to opt for surgery.

Surgery is the only type of medical eye floaters treatment currently available. The most common type of surgery for eye floaters removal is vitrectomy, which involves removing the vitreous humor (the gel-like solution in the eye) together with any debris (the 'floaters') and replacing it with a saltwater solution. The procedure is generally effective for treating eye floaters, however, it does come with a high risk of side effects, including: retinal tears, retinal detachment, cataract, inflammation, and infection.

The other type of surgery for eye floaters treatment is YAG laser removal. This procedure uses a specialized laser to burn off the individual floaters. For this operation to be successful, the floaters need to be well-defined, and they need to be in the middle of the eyeball. People with too many eye floaters or floaters close to the retina are not eligible for this procedure. Like vitrectomy, YAG laser removal is associated with a number of side effects and it is only carried out at a few specialist centers.
