What Is Asperger’s Syndrome?

What Is Asperger’s Syndrome?

Posted on August 12, 2019 by Jason Robles

Should autism and Aspergers be
considered separate disorders? The debate in the medical
community rages on. Hey, guys, this is Annie
guest-hosting for D News. This week, the Scottish
singer Susan Boyle made headlines by announcing
her diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome, opening
up new conversations about the often
misunderstood condition. Asperger’s is
characterized by difficulty in social interaction and
nonverbal communication, and in some cases, clumsiness,
atypical use of language, and other symptoms. And currently, it’s considered
part of autism spectrum disorder, a diagnosis that’s
increased significantly over the past two decades. According to the
British Medical Journal, autism diagnoses were
rare in the UK and the US until the ’90s, when
the rates began surging. They’ve since leveled
off in the UK, but according to the
Center for Disease Control, autism rates have continued
to grow in the US. As of 2008, one in
88 children were identified as being on
the autism spectrum. The spectrum contains a range
of conditions, characterized by social and
communicated challenges in certain behavioral pattern. ASD is about five times as
prevalent in boys as in girls. The spike in rates is
not fully understood, though it’s been suggested
that the spike is related to increased awareness and
changing diagnostic standards. What the autism spectrum
entails is still being hammered out in
the medical community. Earlier this year, for
example, Asperger’s Syndrome was removed from
the DSM-5, which is the manual psychiatrists
use to diagnose. It was folded in with autism as
basically a higher functioning form of the disorder. Asperger’s patients
don’t typically suffer from cognitive
or linguistic impairment and are often above
average intelligence. Still newer research finds
that there may in fact be significant biological
differences between Asperger’s and autism. Harvard neurologists
and psychiatrists measured brain connectivity
among Asperger’s and autism patients using a measure
called EEG coherence. They found that
this measure could be a distinguishing factor but
that larger studies are needed, also pointing out that
those differences can have huge implications for
patients, their families, and their caregivers. As always, let us know your
thoughts in the comments. For D News, this is Annie.

As someone who personally has Asperger's… I'll tell you what it is. It is basically being "social retarded". People with Asperger's lack the automatic function to translate non-verbal communication, and must learn to do so consciously. Pretty much everything about Asperger's comes from that issue.

As for if there's a difference or not… I've looked up the symptoms of High-Functioning Autism and Asperger's Syndrome and basically… I have a little of each. So either they misunderstand the signs of Asperger's or they are certainly connected. Still, neither are very crippling outside of issues that include or require a lot of non-verbal communication.

I have the Asperger's Syndrome and it can be pretty annoying, because I know I'm overreacting and that it is annoying other people (and some times myself too), but I can't change who I am!

I think that we may be no where near a definite answer and clean-cut identification for mental and developmental disorders.  I don't think any two people experience their same-diagnosis disorders in the same way.

Wait a minute…..some symptoms are; clumsiness, social awkwardness and atypical speech????

WTF. WOW the pharmaceutical companies really want to trick doctors into mis-diagnosing as many people as possible.
The majority of these traits can be found in nearly any eccentric, intro-verted, shy or hyper person – its not a disease, just a personality type- stop believing BS people. I'm sure SOME people LEGITIMATELY have it but not nearly  the amount these so called 'studies' have shown.

IT SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THAT SPECTRUM YES!! Look, I hate this "official title", because when I tell people, the first thing when I say "its the highest form of autism", I bet you they think of some verbally impaired person, who doesn't know how to communicate, … my god, just get asperger off of that fucking list! Look, I KNOW THAT IT IS just a TITLE, but it still bothers the crap out of me being referred to as legally autistic! WHAT THE FUCK!!

As a 20 year old male in the UK with Asperger's Syndrome, for me I have often found myself having to teach people about my condition, which is incredibly frustrating considering that one of the main things I personally struggle with is socialising and verbal communication, which is kind of ironic. The way I explain it is that I have Asperger's, which is a form of Autism, so I struggle with certain things people on the Autistic spectrum have, but perhaps not as severely, especially with socialisation, friendships and managing anxiety. Yeah. That summary works for me, personally, but I've known other people, both Autistic and with Aspergers, where that summary wouldn't work for them. It's all unique, I guess. ^^

I got it, and I would say I am a bit socialy awkvard, I refuses to lie, I know to not point out stuff and so that hurt others,(unless they ask, then I am honest) as some people with asperger have. But I dont like to make white lies either.

I personally think its a big difference between aspberger and autism, Its like saying that someone that got nerv damage from neck down and cant move is the same as  epilepsy. Similar in some ways, but not the same.

It took my doctor 19 years of not getting Close to an asperger's diagnose. Just like With Bechterews, depression, sleeping problems, forced thoughts, eating problems, murder thoughts, ocd and rainbowhinn inflamation I had to fight to get help. I still haven't received help for more than my Bechterews (which took 11 years to diagnose…), rainbowhinn inflamation (which took 6 years to diagnose, I went to an expert on my own and found out being on antibiotics for 6 years straight for an infection was very wrong and I should have had cell poisoning and steroids instead.) and lastly he helped me With my constipation, which was quite easy cause of the obvious symptoms.
I'm currently the world's sickest man With over 16 different conditions total. To qualify to be on my list the conditions must excibit symptoms multiple times a month and have lasted for 4 years or longer. It's no fun being that sick, but it's quite an accomplishment.

People with Asperger's syndrome and other ASD's may both:
Be over or under sensitive to (individual types of) sensory stimuli.
Have meltdowns caused by sensory stimuli.
Engage in repetitive self stimulatory behaviors (rocking, hand flapping, tip toe walking, shaking head, taping or hinting self softly to a rhythm, rapid blinking,  wiggling fingers and/or smelling hands to name a few).
Bearing in mind allot of people with lower functioning autism can still talk will not be able to make and maintain friendships.
    Lack eye contact when talking.
I think there are more however I am not sure but that may be because i am tired.

I often wonder if I have Asperger's. When I was at school, I never mixed with the other children, was painfully shy, always spent time alone, lacked social imagination, took things literally and sometimes still do. I also was obsessed with spinning objects and sometimes still am. I'm also painfully shy and when certain things are out of sequence, it freaks me out. I'm also obsessed with numbers and dates and often will be focussed on a subject such as WWII or the Roman Empire.

First of all, it is ASPERGERS not ASSBURGERS.

Second of all, I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome in April 2012, a year before this diagnoses was switched to Autism Spectrum Disorder, and honestly, I LIKE the fact Asperger's Syndrome is grouped with other degrees of Autism because it is as the term says, a spectrum, it just makes it easier all around to diagnose and to explain the syndrome.

Pfft, I have Aspergers, and I love to be around people. I don't know what to say at times, but sometimes I don't care, because most conversations are just silly to me. When I'm around my friends, I love to chat, and do things.

No, it's not like Autism… although it causes me balance and motor issues where I can bump into walls or door frames by accident.

When people talk, they usually talk about someone else, and it just sounds rude and impolite to me, so I don't say much.

Now… when I'm sick, or overly tired, I tend to pause (like a stutter?) during talking, or lose track of things as though my mind won't think, but that's in extremely unhealthy situations. It also slows me down a lot from doing my homework in a timely manner when I'm really sick, but I still understand when someone is upset or other social queues because I've learned, and I care a lot about people.

I still miss sarcasm, or some other social queues… don't be subtle with an aspie, it's kind of rude really.

1:05 I feel the need to correct you, there. It isn't five times more prevalent, it's just harder to pin Aspergers on girls because they, more commonly, grow in more tight-knit social groups. It's been shown that girls with Aspergers have an easier time with socializing.

One of the theories is that ASD is a dysfunction with the brains ability to process information. In autism the brain slows down its functions and ignores stimuli as a defense mechanism. In Asperger's the brain shuffles and prioritizes its functional ability to respond to stimuli differently than a normally functioning brain.

    2. seems to me that you think ppl with syndroms and other sort of problem are a scary one

    4. how can you feel satisfyed by herrasing some one with a problem? how can that be a victory to some one that have "easier" in life? to understand things and sucha things
    5. ppl that write sucha posts and reply or laughing some one spell a word wrong is having a problem and that can be caursed how your parents teached you or you got bullied in school so be a man or a woman and stand up for your right if you got abused/assulted/bullied why not take a step out of your closet and see that there is ppl that feel for you and wanna guid you how to deal with that problem.

My son is three and he was "diagnosed" as autistic last year.
He doesn't have conversations with people but he communicates in other ways, mostly by using his hands to pull you to what he wants.
It's amazing to me how little real information there is about autism. There are plenty of descriptions about the behaviors but nothing definitive about cause or real "treatment."
I don't see him as sick or disabled or anything like that. He is and no doubt will continue to be highly capable of whatever he wants.
Like with any other person, it's simply a matter of understanding him.

I hate it when people say Asperger's is part of the autism spectrum! I have Asperger's and I am above average intelligence. Most people don't even know I have it. And when people start talking about it like saying people with Asperger's are so weird it really pisses me off and it makes me want to yell at them. But I understand people have little knowledge about it.

Let autism be where it should be. The traits in Asperger's is basically autism, in my opinion.
