from water sports to wildlife this beach
town in the Palm Beaches is full of history and hidden gems I’m Frank
Licari and this is Jupiter this program is brought to you by
discover the Palm Beaches visit the Palm Beaches dot-com for more information so before all the boats and the condos
and the amazing houses here what was Jupiter before that the White House was
the real first permanent settlement here in modern times being finished in 1865
and it was several decades after that before we really got a town here and so
we are in the shadow of what you call a large tree you said tree looks this
looks like multiple trees to me there’s a few places where you can see the roots
hanging down like long strands of hair and when those grab hold into the ground
that’s it they’re going to turn into a whole extra trunk that’s not it’s
beautiful yeah and there’s a great story on why the tree is here it commemorates
the fact that the original keepers house here in this howling wilderness three
guys taking care of this lighthouse with no town around them they lives in the
house here right here right here which tragically burned down in 1927 I thought
you’re going to tell me the banyan tree pushed me so who lives here what’s this
about this house was built by a guy named
George Tyndall and he built this house in 1892 and it’s now the oldest
surviving home in Jupiter we even got some historic vegetation the yard with
these pineapples they know how to pineapple on a pile you better see our
pineap– side most people think when they hear Florida fruit there the first
thing is oh it’s orange oranges sure but a hundred years ago it was playable and
I’ve been learning strawberries we were the favorite peppers I mean we’re
tomatoes stuff down here that’s what drew people down here is my drawing the
great growing seasons this big Bell is from Pennock plantation it was set right
in the middle of it as the lunch bill the dinner bell I in the end of the
workday and the volunteer fire alarm bell every ring that you ever just like
on your own when you’re myself on this is over here on laundry waiting up to
watch people they’re like yeah yeah right when you want to I want to hear it
and we don’t get a chance to hear today fine Josh whatever ruined my fun
whatever you could nice solid orbit with iron door yeah
yeah honey there’s 105 stairs to the top two people ever not make it sometimes it
gets up to one of the landings and they say you know that’s all for today wow
this is an amazing view we got our Inlet here the lighthouse is particularly
useful for people using our Inlet which is very treacherous before modern times
it the lighthouse had nothing to do with the inlet but here we are called a
landfall light all the shipping that is trying to go from the Gulf of Mexico
around Florida through those comparatively narrow Florida Straits has
to pass right by here and we’re actually east of Miami east of Cape Canaveral
easy to have a boat accident I want to talk a little bit as you pass by the
actual the lens yes it’s coming called fernell lens we are very proud of 13
first-order lenses the biggest kind in America we’ve got one of them and it’s
still active talking about the paint is that special paint on the lighthouse we
have to use very special paint made in Germany so the bricks can breathe out
the moisture that we get here in South Florida the lens is from France the
paint is from Germany the bricks are from bricks Earth’s brought down from
New England where actually that we’re standing on deck that has big white
brackets will made out of Maine green thank god yes this is a sturdy very
sturdy so you can come out here you can see pretty much all of the area yeah
it’s 14 miles to the horizon amazing getting ready to throw out the first
pitch here at the Miami Marlins game as South Florida PBS explore spring
training in Jupiter and I’ve got the tools of the trade right here I am
getting ready to do it up it’s not I’m not take tobacco Bluff air work so I
have to imagine that Jupiter changes a full bunch one two three training begun
there’s a huge hustle and bustle going on around here especially with the
famous Cardinals have a lot of people from the Midwest here right
the Marlins we have the local fan base and we have over 150,000 people that
come through right so Brian we’re at roger dean stadium you kind of grew up
here right I mean this is like you’ve been here forever yeah I played here in
a first year in the stadium actually for the Jupiter hammer when did this all
start 1998 after I retired I came back here and got to manage so I met my wife
here you may work here yeah so what you’re living let me guess you’re on the
field right with your tight pants on and she goes oh my god I got up I gotta meet
that I wish I could tell you that’s exactly what happened by my
mother-in-law worked in the ticket office and oh come on
didn’t her mother approve right away or did she get well not that guy I think
she likes me more than my wife does is that right
hi there so I’ve been working for Brian a mother-in-law and I was talking to you
Gretchen you’re Betty hi Betty a husband of his son a wall like he said that you
you love him more than your daughter loves him
probably well there you go you come here often
every year I wasn’t a pick-up line I’m asking you yeah do you come here often
yet every every year how long you been following the baseball ships I played in
oh look at you now what position did you play where you get your tall yeah yeah
okay okay so you’re a pitcher with Tom Cruise all right so here’s what is your
role here I need you as I’m throwing out the first pitch today oh really yes what
do I do give me a little give me a little
footing what you got for me aim high and to the right high into the right my
advice is to never stand on top of the mouth never stand on top of the NatWest
exactly what I’m going to do all right keep my eye on up on the glove
follow-through all right I’m going to be throwing out the first pitch today did
you know that I did not yeah so now and you see how your face change yeah so I
have a big responsibility so you got any tips for me about it don’t bounce it
starting to get a little nervous I’m not going to lie I’m representing you I’m
representing you the audience and I take that I take that to heart I take that as
a very very big responsibility and I hope I don’t let you down today Oh God there you go how fun and right
across the street from roger dean stadium you’ll find a Bakula town center
it’s a newish planned community built around an old concept they built 3,000
residents here all around a Main Street so that people have a place to eat shop
and hang out it’s a really nice community very friendly atmosphere and
Abaco was what we were looking for in our retirement years because I don’t do
everything I want right here in downtown Napa college oh and Jupiter within a few
months because everybody retires and decides to open up a restaurant when
they retire you said what would I want in my life that I would want around a
lot and I could own and you said beer that’s right and great food great food
with a Charlotte Flair and here we are on the east side of Jupiter nestled in
between us one and the Intracoastal Waterway you’ll find Harborside place a
place where you can go to eat lunch breakfast dinner hang out with friends
bring the family stroll the sidewalks do a little shopping and by the way if
you’ve got your own boat you’re lucky enough you can dock it right here and
you’re in the middle of everything you’ll need to have a fun day in Jupiter
let’s go meet some of the locals here we are along this beautiful
brand-new stretch of a1a we’ve got the lighthouse the beautiful Jupiter
lighthouse right off to our side we’ve got three miles of dog-friendly beaches
that we get to be the stewards of and we’ve just got the most amazing
neighborhood just such a great place for somebody who has never been a Jupiter
tell me the best thing about Jupiter laid back laid back I just feel very
relaxing yeah there’s nothing hurried about it the food is delicious the
margaritas are grey you’ve had one or two three maybe oh yeah good being on
this side of Jupiter is not all about tropical drinks and fresh fish here at
the Square grouper you can enjoy live music and nightlife as you grab a
cocktail sit by the water watch the sunset and enjoy everything that jupiter
has to offer most people come to jew perform various reasons one of the
reasons is to be able to cruise down the Intracoastal Waterway and sometimes you
can do it paddleboarding we’re not just going to
paddle right we’re going to try get you to do a little bit of yoga with how many
people do you would you say you’ve instructed in the paddleboard yoga we
probably put over 50,000 people in a while but nobody with the obviously
physical presence of this guy not your normal 2z now the challenge normal I’m
expecting great things sure sure aren’t we all we want to make sure that we get
you off the dock without a ball right most of the bump bump like bump on the
head don’t have bump we don’t we don’t want that beautiful face yeah all right
well I hate to tell you just being on the dock I’m already feeling like I’m
going to fall off so that’s gonna be fun I promise okay
so what do we do first there’s a paddle there’s a paddle and they’re scoring and
that’s where you came up with a naval any other requirement by the wall you
have to have I’d like that so I get ankle floaties as well when you’re an
oval floaties no we’re not careful we might put cement blocks all right and
from here I want you to get familiar with the board the one with the ocean do
whatever I feel it out the sooner that we start to paddle the easier is to keep
your balance XO but I’ll do it anyway I think you’re
going to be fine figure out the beautiful aspects of yoga on water is
about not being tied to anything and learning to go with the flow and go with
the tide gotcha so we say as a yogi if you can maneuver
on the water and not worry about the obstacles you can do the same thing in
life push-up position Oh God maybe there’s something very
magical about doing Sun Salutation honoring the Sun on the water inhale
rise and open up the heart the heart five how do you know I haven’t bought
folded you can eyeball it you’re gonna drop back right and you’re gonna rise
warrior two can I bring him hold on you’re not this
you got this I have confidence in you don’t know what I do your lawyer and
their cronies all right now let’s swing kneel down back into push-up position
down you go I mean I’m a warrior warrior that was
cool tell me a little bit at the history here at guanabana we opened in 2008
before that it was a kayak shop in a very small scale restaurant they closed
down and that’s when myself my partners came on board when people say what’s a
cool spot to go they all say guanabana and that’s I guess because of what
you’ve done here and that was the mission when we first opened the idea
was we wanted a place if you’re from Florida this is what should be here when
you come to Florida this is what you’re looking for obviously you have a little
bit to do with the food right biggest things that we stand behind is the fact
that we only use fish from the state of Florida one of the biggest missions that
I know that they had and when we brought everything to the table almost ten years
ago was you know we wanted to be an outdoor place that everybody sees and
everybody comes and have that enjoyable time you’ve got families enjoying food
you’ve got sort of the bar crowd to hang out after work crowd you’ve got sort of
the older generation enjoying their own little quiet time it’s it’s a very
unique blend you have here we even do live music three days a week so with
that we bring in a really young crowd I have yet to meet anybody who doesn’t
like hanging out outside under palm trees and under umbrellas oh yeah well
guys this is uh this is great congratulations
yeah and continued success jupiter has obviously a lot of blood
parks but tell us about this one so River Bend is really special it’s on
the west side of Jupiter it’s about 680 acres of just wow nature yes trees the
wildlife birds adjacent to the park is lost at River Battlefield Park which is
about 60 acres of pretty much the same thing so it’s kind of you get two parks
in one mm-hmm and a lot of people come here just to kind of hike through the
trail sure and bike through the trails run jog a lot of people kayak through
lots of extra Berzerker and then you can get the cache here right and take them
all the way can you can rent a kayak for the day completely free to access people
to have a picnic here there’s a picnic island you can bring your horse can use
the equestrian be hidden yep I can bring my horse if you have a
horse I’ve been wanting to bring my horse somewhere and now I know where to
bring it is bringing in silver for him or her service yeah there’s a couple
other parks around right the Burt Reynolds Park is well learned after
famous actor friend of ours so the river runs five miles and then it
comes into the Jupiter waterway and then out into the ocean so I could
technically yes cuz I wanted we can do all the way and be like yes yeah imma
county operates aquatic centers recreation centers Beach parks boys
museum and the lagoon there and then River Band of options are viable market
everything it’s the place to be is what you’re saying baby that’s a great PR
move I was awesome well thanks very much how did this all come about well this
was a storage house built in 1898 s mitten or Hill is over six thousand
years old the midden been digging what’s up ELLs
that we’re built on them if you look as you come up the stairs they’re all tiny
boisterous or they were very prominent in this area so there’s any style thing
they saw style of the home is the Jersey Shore espouses all right the historic
architect we consulted with a birth bender from the keys suggested the 1930s
period because the house was renovated so many times but after the original
owners were no longer here made a Harry and Susan Wright what made them choose
to Jerry was here I’m just as pioneered here he’s had my house
patient already west highway one one of his ways of making money and he
disassembled that building floated it down the river reassembled it there and
that’s where they live while they were building the house in 1898 how long before we put this on Airbnb
though Airbnb I don’t think that although this would be a beautiful place
to win sit on the porch out here now it’s heaven every great place to live always
involves a vibrant arts community and that brings us here to the west side of
Jupiter to the Performing Arts Academy of Jupiter this is just affirming
jumping you’ve been teaching here or how long 14 years 14 years and you teach at
each theater actually is an improv studio here has five dance videos
theater with dance classes theater classes obviously music classes such as
voice guitar private lessons and now they do stuff like silk which you can
see from sill canes which I’m going to do we’re going to do a little routine we
are we’re going to see Africa lives so one of the perks of having your own
television shows you get to do shameless plugs every once in a while and beside
me I have my good friends Travis Thomas and Jesse Furman and together we make
something called the Joe of comedy experience what’s so unique about what
we do well you know when you walk in you a lot of suggestions for and on the
forum are a lot of different ideas so automatically incorporates the audience
into the show essentially they’re cool writers in our show right they give us
ideas and we’ve we’ve gotten some good reviews over the years forty is a practical reason cause the
money this guy you’ve never heard it but and you don’t have it their history I
have to change at the a-team of comedy based in common you time and the end the
most fun you can have in Jupiter so we had a couple that used to come to the
show and all of a sudden the Hudson was gone they have a song we found out that
they got divorced and in the divorce proceeding they actually put to the joke
comedy shows into their divorce papers and basically the wife got the what
throughout the Joe so we never saw the husband again so that’s how good we are
we drive people to divorce but at least one of them sticks around we’re really
are good thanks guys thank you just down the street from Jupiter
Riviera Beach offers sandy beaches and water adventures
whether you’re diving sliding or just chilling so dive right in and check out
the 800 foot long snorkelling Trail near the Blue Heron bridge it’s a rare
opportunity to see a diverse array of sea life and you may just catch a
glimpse of an octopus spotted ray or a starfish but another beloved sea
creature is the star of this attraction manatee lagoon and FPL eco Discovery
Center is a gathering spot for the gentle giants visitors can explore the
educational exhibit and from the observation deck they can get a unique
view of the sea cows as they congregate in the warm waters for an adventure off
shore and you can charter a dive boat a deep-sea fishing trip or dinner cruise
at the Riviera Beach City Marina and be in deep waters in just minutes paddle
board and kayak rentals are also available
finally you can bring the whole family to the rapids water park founded in 1979
this 30 acre landmark attracts kids of all ages to experience over 40 water
slides and attractions including a wave pool and a lazy river the park is open
daily during the spring and summer months and on weekends through the fall so how many people do you get it’s come
through here we can put 150,000 visitors a year
are you a what yeah this is chaos these particular bears were about 20
pounds when they came to are considerably smaller than what you hear
but even at that size still incredibly dangerous
sure oh my goodness a lot of people sometimes I’m saying think oh it’s like
a zoo it’s not a zoo right well we are actually we’re Wildlife Hospital so we
take in over 5,000 animals every year and the goal is to return to the wild
and we’re successful with about 40% of the cases that we see amazing this is
who could rate horned owl yeah this is the largest now that we have here in
Florida and he what swooped down on you and grabbed you with us with his talents
if you were a small animal yeah Fiorella rodent something like that rabbit does
the owl have a predator that goes after them um unfortunately we normally cert
these guys it’s human related injury know their parents light it’s dark out
because you guys are first nocturnal sure when they end up getting hit by a
car yeah how much he weighs up 11 pounds well you know what are the work I do
need work up know about two pounds are you kidding no well then the claws are
just taking circulation on my hand that’s why not it’s okay wait what’s
really amazing we showing up now is it whose neck ability oh I did I did do a
lot of yoga yeah these guys are perfect residents here unfortunately were taken
from their mom how would I know it’s a bobcat like when did the boss come in
where’s the bottle the bottoms a tail short tail but if you look at the back
of their ears right they look like they have eyes in the back of their head and
it’s been going on look at that weather here if you have ever one in the wild
I mean if for some reason it’s acting strangely which is twitching aggress
doing doing you know what I wait – run – oh that’s strange then definitely give
us a call you guys have a unit that you go out and pick them up we have a
volunteer unit majority of animals are brought in by the public but then you
know there’s a lot of funding that’s needed if you actually care you don’t
charge here no we don’t charge any admission here it’s all free all right
that’s cool what else can we see like alligators yeah let’s see some alligator
yeah let’s do it obviously you’ve got the the cranky one
rocking out the Caucasus the crocodile this is good
so the difference between the croc and the alligator hold them up Wow hi there
you’ll see how to swing see the crocodile that’s a great dental program
now if you look at out here – when their mouths closed no prob explained that it
is which is a cute one thank you it’s across what closes mouth
all in speech oh this is probably as big as you don’t get before I can stop
holding them I got bigger ones do you want no I’m good that’s good
now that I’ve worked up an appetite it’s time to pay a visit to this Jupiter
resident chef zine AB is a specialist in vegan cuisine and performs cooking demos
all around town and she’s offered to show me one of her favorite recipes will
chef C I’m in my element right now alright because I spend a lot of time in
the kitchen so we’re going to make our healthy coconut curry do today with T no
one decides it’s an African dish I grew up with being African Lebanese and so I
did almost have all my stuff organic yourself like that your form the table
Turner sure hi okay I think this is is good so you just cut it into like those
heels because it’s going to cook completely okay can you just put it
right in no hot can you do the cutting helmet I’m pretty good with it other
your alleppey yeah yeah oh that’s a nice um no it’s not no exercise yeah we’re
going to flip the L coconut oil you’re in the pot I need all the seasoning and
everything so marinate together yeah can you smell it over to me that’s where the
coconut darling you’re awesome I really have a smell Stevie Dallas you
know what’s gonna it’s going I better have the spices in now yeah what we put
in here so I have the colon in and I’m going to put curly and you’re just your
design balls I guess I got everything that’s a real job my grandmother said
when you eyeball stuff comes out good look at the colors yeah yeah all right
it’s a potpourri of color oh yeah musician you listen we’re going to add
in the coconut milk this is coconut milk coconut love again now we get through
around the quinoa so it’s pretty much done yeah chef D you
are a pleasure in the kitchen thank you yeah this was a pleasure for me not only
known for its fishing its outdoor parks its restaurants but also one of the most
renowned regional theaters in the country
Jupiter boasts the most jupiter theater and the man behind it andrew kato is
responsible for most of it right well we have an incredible team here but it’s
you let’s be out there have some at the top
that’s right so how did this all start give me the history Reynolds had this
theater as a dinner theater originally in 1979 and very successfully ran it
with amazing team including many of his star friends right here for 10 years and
then the theater actually went to a couple other companies before it fell
into complete disrepair and then in the early 2000s 2003 with a number of board
members who wanted to make sure that this was not left as a cultural
wasteland Milton and tomorrow multi put up a major gift to make it the most
Super Theater as it currently is now tell us your history here because it’s
incredible so you go back with this well sure I mean I was a waiter here in the
Burt Reynolds dinner theater days which I’m I’m actually very proud that that
happened you have what five at the time yep pretty much okay so it was a
wonderful training ground for a kid who you know didn’t go surfing sure um I
came to the theater where do you see the theater in five to ten years what’s
what’s what’s the next thing what are we doing we building a hotel with only on
malts hotel well we have some surprises there um ultimate goal would be able to
develop new authors new voices in the theater I think the obligation of
regional theater to create something that can be explored in the national
landscape and that’s not just for Floridians it’ll go on and have an
additional life well I mean you’re doing great work here obviously the space is
growing it’s a it’s a staple of the town it’s meant so much when you step down
who’s taking over you are as you can tell from our time in Jupiter this
little beach town is all about quality of life whether it’s learning history at
the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse or catching a Marlin spring training game at roger
dean stadium jupiter is a great place to discover especially if dockside dining
world-class theater and great shopping are on your to-do list we hope you
enjoyed getting to know jupiter florida and we hope that you’ll join us on our
next trip on the town we have a name for this one Harry what is it Harry you know
that perfect are you just making that up and makes it up you’re making it up that
was something quick of you this program is brought to you by
