Hi everybody, I’m Stefano and I try to speak in English But I make a lot of errors I have strange accent and even speak in a slowly way I want to talk about something that Involves me and it’s a malady. I suffer from pain hyperacusis since I’m twenty years old and I don’t want to refer to this condition with this name because I have a coined a new term “phonotalgia”. I want to talk about phonotalgia because hyperacusis is a term that has an historical reference to the psyche so has a psychological connection. But I think that in cases of pain hyperacusis there are not just simply cognitive causes but real physical damages to the tissue or probably something else, however that involves neurons and nerves. For example there are the studies by Jaime Garcia-Anoveros. He talks about “noxacusis” He tries to explain pain hyperacusis under physiological-neurological point of view, so I’m not sure that I suffer from noxacusis because it’s not possible to make a biopsy because there is so invasiveness for human beings, but I think that phonotalgia has major, has greater picturability, so can better explain my condition of pain. That’s not chronic pain because it’s just mechanism pain and There is a specific cause and effect: the sound and then pain. So it’s noise-induced pain or sound-induced pain. I want even to say that a lot of time institutions don’t assume their responsibilities and they think this problem is quite psychological and they tell you that you should do a cognitive behavioral therapy. But I think that there’s an inner error inside these hypotheses because hyperacusis, but not hyperacusis, I mean the pain condition has a own role, it’s unique so it’s different despite the “low back pain”. So it’s not “low back pain”, it’s not the invisible arm (phantom limb), it’s something that concerns the ear. So what most maybe is important to say is that actually the instruments can’t detect what’s inside the ear there are only Instrumental exams that can detect if you can hear or not, but not the pain factor that involves a physiological way to understand the pain. And then, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy It’s not something that you can do for everything because in this case The sound is external. Even for other maladies there’s an external ambient that you can’t control, but for example if I have low back pain and I have to find an equilibrium I can do it because the street, the pavement, etc are quite similar; if I want to go by feet from Rome to Paris I don’t find all these differences, Maybe there are the Alps but even in this case the walk is so slowly so that I don’t feel the difference. Despite the sound is very different. You can pass from 10 decibels to 100 decibels and even more of 100 decibels and even in one second: imagine the stereo, you can pass from low decibels to very loud decibels and so it’s quite impossible to control the sounds because if you go out on the street there is a barking dog, an ambulance can pass , a motorcycle can pass, there can be a thunder. So it’s very hard to understand this kind of pain that involves the sounds and the noises and it’s hard to try even to imagine that you can maintain an equilibrium because there’s a lot of difference so each malady is one and unique malady. Pain hyperacusis is something different from other kind of maladies and I just wanted to say this so to call my condition phonotalgia because in pain hyperacusis there’s still the word hyperacusis, but I don’t suffer from hyperacusis anymore. This phase ended a lot of time ago but the pain factor, the pain condition still lasts in my ear. So that’s all. I want so to introduce this new term because I think we need some rights, specific rights that now actually are absent and that’s all. I think that we need to be protected We need to stay free and protected in the world without harassment, without sound harassment, without escaping all the times. At the moment we have not these kind of laws globally there are no laws according to people like me that suffer from pain by sounds and noises.
