Dr. Mandeep Singh | Ophthalmology

Posted on August 8, 2019 by Jason Robles

>>Hello, my name is Mandeep Singh, and I’m a retina specialist
at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine. I am an assistant professor
in the retina division and I specialize in surgical, medical and genetic
diseases of the retina. In the clinic I take care
of many different types of patients with retinal diseases. There are patients that
come with common problems like distortion in their vision because of retinal membranes or retinal detachments or a macular hole and then there are patients with very rare and mysterious conditions like genetic retinal degenerations that affect young and old patients. You know they say you
never have to work a day in your life if you love what you do and I just love what I do. Every day in the clinic
and the lab and the OR is getting to do what I love and it was from my inspiration
right back from day one. I have an active research
component to my job and what my team and I want to do is create a new treatment
during our time here, a treatment for a condition
that up to now is incurable and these conditions are
retinal degenerative diseases where patients lose vision starting very early on in life. My research goal is to
create a stem cell treatment to try to fix these conditions. We hope that by creating
the right kinds of cells to be transplanted into patients’ eyes and creating the surgical procedures and the new instruments that we need we can in the next few years design a whole new stem cell procedure to bring back vision in patients who suffer vision loss from these retinal degenerations. I think this is a great
place to come for patients because it’s a multidisciplinary team that you have at your disposal with doctors with all sorts
of different expertise that can help with whatever
eye condition you have. I always find it a
great honor and pleasure to meet everyone that comes to our center, so if I could help you
with your eye health or if you’d like to discuss anything about stem cell research or clinical trials in gene therapy I would love to meet you and I would be honored to.

Dr. Singh performed my husband's emergency eye surgery and did a phenomenal job. My husband had two tears in his retina and had lost peripheral vision on the right side and bottom of his right eye. Dr. Singh reattached the retina and he his peripheral vision is restored. Thanks Dr. Singh!
