Hi everyone. I’m Kendra from Kendra Perry Nutrition and I’m coming to you from my brand new office slash sewing room my boyfriend’s mother’s been nice enough we’re staying with them because we left New Zealand a little bit early and she has been nice enough to allow me to use her sewing room as my office. So I’m Kendra Perry if you’re tuning in to one of my videos for the first time my name is Kendra Perry I’m a functional diagnostic nutrition partitioner and what I do is I help active woman balance hormones and digestion so they can get back outside and spend more time doing the sports and activities they love and less time indoors being exhausted being fatigued and being overweight okay, so today we’re going to talk about one of my favorite topics. We’re going to be talking about the thyroid The thyroid of course is a gland that’s located on your neck and it regulates your entire metabolism so your thyroid is sluggish you are going to struggle to lose weight. You’re going to be fatigued and you may have a number of other symptoms as well including constipation you might be missing some of the hair on the outer edges of your eyebrow, so it’s really common. You also are probably going to feel really cold all the time you might be dealing cold hands and feet. So if you’re wondering if you have a thyroid issue you know if you’re struggling with weight gain, and I mean like you can’t lose weight no matter what you do you’re eating healthy you’re exercising you’re doing all the right things and you just you can’t you can’t budge a single pound off your body that’s definitely an indication that something might be up with your thyroid, there’s also a few things you can do to actually determine if you have a thyroid issue and the freebie that I’ve just given a link to above It’s just a quick cheat sheet where I list all the symptoms that are associated with thyroid issues also, a really simple at-home test that you can do every single day if you want to you know get an idea if your thyroid is working and then also the kind of testing you’d want your doctor to order to identify a thyroid issue and I also have in that freebie functional lab arranges, so the issue with lab ranges these days is they’re very wide and there’s a lot of women who fit within those range, but they still have thyroid symptoms and it’s really confusing so I actually have listed some of the more functional ranges so more narrow lab ranges and you can kind of find out if you Fit into that sort of subclinical hypothyroidism in which case you’re still going to need to address it so We’re going to be talking about three things you can do to boost your thyroid health which are going to simultaneously help you lose weight, but also help you have more energy and have you help you have better digestion. So there’s a lot of really good benefits that you’re going to see when you start to support your thyroid and today. We’re going to talk about three. So if you’re joining me live today, and I say we have a few people online So I want you to tell me on a scale of one to ten one being not so Happy, ten being very happy like how satisfied are you with your current weight? So if you’re super satisfied? Put a ten if you’re completely not satisfied put one and then anything in between depending on what you feel about your weight and I also want to know is you know put a one in the comments box if you are struggling to lose weight despite eating a healthy diet and this is something I come from or I come across all the time with clients you know I work and I live in a very active community and you know I tend to market to more active women online so I meet these women who are very active they they know how to eat organic, they know how to eat healthy, but they’re still struggling with weight, and it’s you know totally baffling to them they’re wondering like what the heck right because they should be healthy and according to the way you lose weight in Modern Society eat less exercise more right it should just be you know a simple mathematical equation. It should be easy, but it’s not the case. So if you’re watching live don’t be shy throw that in the comments box and today I’m going to you know solve this problem and give you three places to start. These are going to be beneficial whether you have a thyroid problem or not but these are extra important if you are struggling with a thyroid problem. Okay, so let’s see here what I got here, I’m going to give you three tips but I do want to tell you a quick story about one of my clients and the reason I’m telling this story is because I think a lot of people can relate. So I had this client and she was a yoga instructor, so she’s doing yoga like three times a day she is eating a very healthy diet. She has a garden. So she’s growing a lot of her own veggies she’s sourcing really good local meat and when she came to me she was freaking out because she was gaining this massive spare tire around her belly And you know nobody likes a muffin top right? That’s super frustrating And she was wondering she came to me wondering like what’s what am I doing wrong like I’m you know I do yoga I meditate, I’am eating really healthy foods, and I’m just gaining this massive muffin top this huge spare tire around her waist. So we did some testing and we did actually discover that her thyroid wasn’t working properly and she was in that in-between phase so she was having those thyroid symptoms. You know not only was she gaining that muffin top, but she was also very cold she was exhausted all the time and she also had a really slow transit time so she was having really hard poops so not like that perfectly formed poop, but those little pellets you know what I’m talking about and She was actually within that range where her doctor was telling her everything was normal there was nothing wrong with her thyroid but I could see from a functional perspective that her thyroid was not functioning optimally so we started to implement things to support her thyroid and once we started doing that she was able to get back down to her previous body weight. She was able to eliminate that ugly muffin top. That was totally driving her nuts, and Yeah, it made a really big difference in her life, but also her self-esteem Right, it’s it’s really hard to feel good when you’re carrying extra weight and your clothes just feel tight and you just feel uncomfortable all the time. Okay, so I’m going to give you three simple tips and these are some of the things that I did with this client that worked really well. Number one is to consider that you might have a mineral deficiency okay, so minerals actually power the thyroid they are really really important for proper thyroid function and a lot of us are totally mineral deficient it is virtually impossible to get everything you need from food sounds really nice and theory to get all the nutrients you need from food, but in reality it doesn’t really happen so a lot of us have under functioning thyroid and hence. We’re gaining weight because we don’t have good nutrient status so of course the starts with diet and one of the best places to get minerals from is cooked vegetables so I know a lot of people especially because it’s summer, and you know I’m included in this I love to eat raw salads I love to pick veggies straight from the garden I love doing the farmers market, but it’s actually really hard to extract nutrients and minerals from Raw Foods especially vegetables they’re very much tied up in the indigestible fiber and a lot of us who just don’t have Healthy digestion to begin with so it’s actually really hard to get minerals from around vegetables so a great way you can start increasing your mineral content is to eat cooked vegetables and obviously I don’t want you to overcook them so that they’re super dull and mushy and disgusting you want to just lightly cook them so you know when you cook vegetables and they get that really beautiful color the color just kind of pops like that’s the perfect time to eat those vegetables Okay, so if you’re one of those people who you’re wondering if you have a thyroid problem Or you know you have a thyroid problem but you’re just not getting the right treatment a really good place after eating about six cups of cooked vegetables a day is actually to take a mineral supplement to support your thyroid so minerals that your thyroid needs to function include iodine they include selenium. They include a little bit of copper there’s quite a few minerals that your body needs and it is very hard to get these things from food in proper amounts so this is a supplement that I recommend to clients. I actually take it myself. My thyroid is working pretty well these days but when I get stressed it tends to get a little slower and I just went through kind of a stressful move we moved across the world to New Zealand, and then hated it and moved back. So it was a bit stressful so I’ve been a little bit more low-energy and just kind of noticing those minor thyroid symptoms creeping up, so this is a Thyroid Synergy from Designs for Health I love designs for health. They are really really great great company they’re really great if you have celiac or you’re gluten free because they really test all their supplements and make sure that they are devoid of all those things. So this is a really nice mineral support and I really do recommend it for anyone who’s having thyroid problems you want to do about two caps twice a day? If you’re interested in getting a hold of this product it is a practitioner only product just send me a message or you can send just comment on this and I’ll get in touch with you and actually hook you up with an account through my online Dispensary where I can hook you up with a discount and you can order this or whatever you want. It’s really really great for the thyroid and so that’s number one is you need to address the mineral Imbalances that are associated with thyroid and we do that in two ways by eating six cups of cooked vegetables a day as much variety as possible is best, so you know not just eating the same. I’m bad, we’re always wanting to eat kale and mushrooms and beans those are like my favourite things right now. They’re trying to eat lots of variety and as much as possible it’s going to help your mineral status and if you do have a thyroid problem and you’re struggling to lose weight something like this thyroid synergy and designs for health has a really great complement of thyroid nutrients. Okay, so the number two tip for your thyroid to help improve your thyroid function but also to help you lose weight and improve energy levels is to go gluten-free and I know a lot of people don’t want to hear this because who doesn’t like bread right everyone likes to go likes to eat a big sandwich right, but actually there’s a pretty big connection between gluten and the thyroid and pretty much every single client I’ve worked with who has a thyroid issue has benefited from going gluten-free. So the interesting thing about the thyroid and gluten fact that they have very similar protein so the protein that is in gluten is very similar to the thyroid and if you’re eating a lot of gluten and you’re reacting to it sometimes what will happen is the immune system is going to start developing antibodies towards the gluten because it’s not your body’s not liking it it’s causing inflammation, and then you’re continuing to eat gluten and you kind of set your immune system into overdrive and what it does it starts looking around the body looking for anything that resembles glute and then it starts attacking it in the case of the thyroid having similar protein structures that gluten the immune system might actually start attacking the thyroid okay, and that’s actually an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s and it’s actually 90% of the cause of Hypothyroid, So you have the diagnosis hypothyroid, definitely make sure you get your TPO antibodies checked because that’s going to identify an autoimmune issue which actually doesn’t have much to do with your thyroid, but has more to do with your gut and your immune system so I have the ranges that you’re going to want to see on that test, and that freebie that I listed above so going adopting a gluten free diet is totally crucial if you have hyper thyroid if you have Hashimoto’s if you’ve any thyroid condition you got to go gluten-free if you’re trying to lose weight, you gotta go gluten-free it’s just there are so many issues with gluten, and I know it’s Trendy and there’s a lot of people who are just gluten free because they’re you know they think it’s cool or it’s kind of like the hip thing to do you know the hipsters are doing it whatever but there is a lot of significant health benefits that come with it and honestly and working with probably almost a thousand women and people I have never once removed it from someone’s diet and see it not give them some benefit. Either in terms of weight loss or in terms of energy or improving their thyroid conditions. So I definitely recommend going gluten-free. I know it’s not the easiest thing, but I would say the most important thing is to not just replace gluten with gluten free products those are also there refine their process they tend to contain a lot of additives also they totally taste like shit! I find a lot of those gluten-free breads and stuff taste like absolute garbage So you’re not really doing yourself any favors in the flavor department? but anyways, if you’re cutting out gluten, you want to replace it with healthy real foods, things like meat veggies and fat. So going gluten-free is the number two way to support your thyroid and to increase your ability to lose weight. The third thing and this is something I see all the time is to avoid a Low-Calorie diet so eating a really low calorie diet or restricting the food that you eat so kind of following that eat less exercise more philosophy is actually one of the biggest reasons why thyroid issues are so common. So that’s basically been our whole weight loss strategy right for the past. I don’t know like 20-30 years and it’s clearly not working if it were that easy. I think people would be skinny and actually we’re pretty fat these days right like obesity is totally on the rise and it is just been getting worse and worse people are fatter and fatter I was just at the LA airport like I don’t know three weeks ago and I just people watched and watched all the large people walk around like people are huge right and you know we we’ve been following this eat less exercise more sort of protocol and it’s not helping us you may have had this experience you have followed that type of way of eating eat less exercise more you lose weight initially yeah, maybe in the first few weeks. You’re super stoked. You lose this weight, but you know if you actually successfully kept it off you’re in like the lesson1 percent of people who have been able to keep weight off that way. So what is the connection between eating a low-Calorie diet and your thyroid okay, so your thyroid regulates metabolism. Right, so if you are not eating enough food you’re trying to restrict fruit in your diet what you are telling your brain. Is that there isn’t a lot of food right? Resources are scarce so what does the brain do it’s like okay? There’s not much food in this environment we better start to down regulate our metabolism so that we’re not using as much energy, right?. Obviously that makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint, so the brain will actually tell the thyroid to slow down and the result is your metabolism slows down, your energy levels drop and your body switches from being a fat-burning machine to effect storing machine which sucks nobody wants to be a fat storing machine right, so and then so a lot of times you know people think they have these thyroid issues they’re taking thyroid medication, but really they just need to stop eating their low-calorie diet and I know this is really common in women. Women tend to want to lose weight and Interestingly enough 80% of thyroid conditions affect women and I often wonder if it’s because so many women out there are exercising more and eating less. Okay, so that’s the number three tip is to not follow that solution for weight loss and to eat enough calories to fuel your daily activities, right, so I know a lot of people are trying to follow like 1,500 calories a day. It’s not enough not even for someone who isn’t very active it’s a starvation diet and it will down regulate your thyroid and oftentimes what you need to do to kick the back up your thyroid is to actually feed yourself enough food, so basically the signal you’re now telling your brain is there is abundant food in this environment. So metabolism can be fast okay, so those are the three ways that you can help your thyroid these are kind of the three places you need to start number one is to address mineral imbalances by eating at least 6 cups of cooked veggies a day and if you have a thyroid issue taking something like Thyroid Synergy from Designs for Health you want to get access to that at a discounted rate just send me a message, and I can hook you up with an account. Number two is to avoid gluten. Gluten and the thyroid do not go together if you have a thyroid problem Trying to lose weight you need to avoid gluten. Number three is to make sure you’re eating enough calories so to avoid that low Calorie diet and avoid that whole eat less exercise more dogma, don’t follow it. It’s going to mess up your thyroid okay? So those are the three weight things you can do to help your thyroid if you’re wondering if you have a thyroid issue You can check out my checklist I posted the link just above this video. That is totally free and it will basically give you some tips and some strategies to determine if your thyroid is sluggish and if that is in fact the cause of that weight gain that you just can’t seem to shed no matter what you do.
